Solar power systems depend on solar panels, which work to convert sunlight to electricity. Solar panels give homeowners the chance to generate their own clean, no-cost energy.

Solar panels are essentially aggregations of small solar cells, which are wired together and placed in a weatherproof case. When they are struck by sunlight, the solar cells generate a small electrical current. A sufficient number of solar cells when combined can produce a significant amount of current. Even if one cell fails, the others will continue working and the panel as a whole remains effective.

In terms of efficiency and durability, modern solar cells are light years beyond previous units. These new models are able to produce more energy from smaller amounts of sunlight than earlier cells. Electricity is generated only when exposure to sunlight exceeds a certain threshold, and this is different from cell to cell. The latest cells have a very low threshold, and as such they can keep generating electricity for more of the day and in even overcast conditions.

Direct Current (DC) electricity produced by the solar panels would be transferred to the inverter, which then converted it to Alternating Current (AC) electricity, the type which is used in the home.

The difficulty with this setup was that a loss of power was often experienced as the electricity travelled along the long wires from the panels to the inverter. The micro-inverters solve this problem.

The introduction of micro-inverters makes modern solar panels into independent power plants, in a manner of speaking. The elimination of the large inverter makes the entire wiring process much easier, as well.
